恐るべし！ナイロビ

我々を乗せたステーションワゴンはナイロビ市の中心部にある「ヒルトン　ホテル」の玄関前に止まった。玄関前までわざわざ...親切だなぁと思ったが、それにはワケがあった。チップを払う訳ではない。まあ、それはそうとして、ホテルに到着しホッと一息。チェックインをリーダーが済ませてくれていたら、先ほどの機内の日本人のキレイなスチュワーデスさんもチェックインしていた。ずっとそっちを見ていたら目が合った、手を振ると「え、私のこと？」って感じで少し驚いていたが、職業上の笑顔は絶やさないでくれていた。お互い歩み寄ろうとしたが、彼女は同僚と思われるアラブ系のスチュワーデスに制止された。となれば、俺が一方的に近づけば良かったのだが、そんな勇気なかった。これは生涯後悔のワースト10に入るだろう。

　我々の登山装備の入ったこれでもかと重い荷をポーターが部屋まで運んでくれて簡単な案内をしてくれた。あまりにも荷物が重く、気の毒に思えたので、少しチップをはずんだ記憶があるたしか、US$2くらいだった。部屋に荷物を置いた我々は一階ロビーの一角にあるティーラウンジで、あつかましくもビールを注文した。メニューにはそれらしきものは無かったが、大丈夫だろうと思った。ウェイターさんは厨房にではなくレストランの方に向っていった。キチンとビールは出された。日本を出発する以前に読んだ本ではアフリカのビールは馬のションベンのようだ。と記されていたが、そんなことはない、日本のビールに遜色ない。

　そのあと、ホテル内のお土産店街をうろついていたが、絵葉書を売っている店に入ったら、「Are you Chainese ?」と訊かれた「いや、日本人だ.キリマンジャロを登りにいくんだ。」「Sounds great!」という言葉を皮切りにちょっと会話が弾んだ、ろくに英語の勉強はしていなかったが、身振り手振り、単語の羅列で大体意思疎通はできるものだと思った。中国に行ったときは全く通用しなかったが....
部屋に戻る途中、飲み水を確保するためにまた違う売店に行った。物価が安いせいか、1.5LのペットボトルでUS$0.5くらいだった。そこにはしっかりと「キリマンジャロの水」と商品名が記載されていた。勿論英語だったけど、それくらいは読めた。この水には登山時に再三お世話になることになる。

　このホテルは世界に知られるヒルトンの中でも高級な部類に位置するらしく、実に広く、部屋が立派な
ことは勿論部屋からの景色がすばらしかった。すぐ手前に市街地が一望でき、その先には広大な平原と森が見えた。

　と、そこでホテルの近くに一件コンビニエンスストアー「ファ○りーマート」らしき看板が見えた！深夜徘徊族の我々には大変興味あったので俺と同室のK氏はそこへ行ってみることにした。で、ホテルからでて、20m歩いただろうか、ホテルの前で待ち伏せしたらしき、十数人の現地の人たちがそれこそ吐き捨てたキャンディに群がる蟻のごとく俺達に何か要求しながら近寄ってくる。思わず速攻でホテルに引き返した。その看板のある建物まではわずか200m以内。リーダーに話たところ、「それはタクシー屋か、物売りか、物乞いだよ。ナイロビは世界で１，２位を争う物騒な都市だからきをつけろ。なるべく単独では出歩かないように、パスポートや財布を奪われたことがあるから...」と言われた。ステーションワゴンを玄関前に停めた理由はおそらくこれであろう。旅慣れない我々にとってその200mのいかに遠いことか！街で200m歩くのに困難な状況なのに標高6000m近いキリマンジャロなんてどれほど大変なことだろうか.

　夕食はバイキングだが、日本のホテルのバイキングとは全然違う。美味しい。日本のヒルトンもこんな感じなのか？と考えた。なんとなく日本の知人に電話したくなり電話をかけまくったら翌日の電話料金が約US$100も要求されることになった。時差の影響はあまり感じなかった。日本との時差は９時間遅れ！でも移動しただけで、かなり疲れた。寝る前に、K氏に高所順応に役立つと思われる、出発前日本で購入した、V○vO2なる深海鮫肝エキスのドロップを勧めた。これは活動一週間前から摂取する必要があるため、ちょうど一週間前のヒルトンの夜から摂取することにした。K氏は気に入らなかったらしく、「もういいや」といって翌日から服用しなくなったが...ともあれアフリカ着第一日終了。無事ぐっすり眠れた。」
